BIM Scope of Work

Pinnacle created the 3D BIM Model (LOD 400) for MEP and Fire Protection trades for Muscat International Airport - Cargo & MRO area to meet the various project objectives including:

Preparation of Shop Drawing / 2D Drawings for Construction – Tekla Detailing

Concrete Lift Drawings – Elevation Drawings for Vertical Elements, Detail Drawings

3D BIM Model Creation for Foundation, Horizontal Structural Components, Vertical Structural Components, Other Structural Components, Pre-Cast Elements

Challenges and Solutions

Challenge

After completing the reinforcement of one panel, we had to reinforce the other panels through the ‘copy special’ command to avoid repetition.

Solution

Tekla Software helped multiple users to work simultaneously in cloud servers across different time zones of the world. Tekla literally vanished all the trouble as we’re using master model sharing.

Challenge

The precast modeling project involved 2228 nos. of precast wall panels, 5290 nos. of ribbed floor panels, 1250 nos. of beam panels, and 4436 nos. of columns were involved, and it was challenging to execute the project within the short & stipulated time frame specified by Clark Pacific

Solution

We created various types of detailed work & generated families of slab edge types, and thickened the slab earlier. So that the time consumption got reduced and the problem got solved smoothly. We also arranged internal training to guide our team correctly.

Challenge

Preparing quality shop drawings for all the panels within a short time was difficult

Solution

Clone drawing preparation is one of the key facets of using Tekla software. Using this process we created shop drawings for similar panels. It helped to reduce time for creating shop drawings.

Challenge

In such a huge precast concrete project, it is difficult to maintain the numbering system for all the panels. “Number system” is essential to identify the particular panels and reinforcement for the project.

Solution

Working with the “Numbering” system is a significant part of Tekla Software. If we require changing the Rebar Model, we must execute this panel’s “Perform Numbering.” The “Perform Numbering” system helped us quickly get the bar mark of the Rebar from the model.

Challenge

Repeated use of components in precast panels like embeds, hangers, lifters, couplers, etc.

Solution

We created many custom components for modeling and used them in the model.

Challenge

Difficult to get the BBS in the shop drawing after the reinforcement of the panels

Solution

We could quickly get the BBS of the rebars from Tekla.

Challenge

Pouring was essential in this precast project to identify which part was poured at a particular time

Solution

Using the ‘Pouring’ option in Tekla, we showed the concrete model with different pouring-in sites.

Challenge

Phasing was also essential for representation and identification.

Solution

Phasing showed the entire concrete model with different color regions (part by part or floor by floor). Consequently, it efficiently helped to identify a particular section of the concrete model.

Challenge

Selection & Visibility filters were also essential to select & identify a particular element or object from the entire model

Solution

With a Selection and Visibility filter, Tekla helped quickly identify any object from the entire model.

Challenge

It was difficult to calculate the number of panels for Site Transportation – as a result, the Transportation Cost of the Pre-cast Contractor would enhance.

Solution

Lotting, being the most crucial feature of Tekla, helped us quickly measure group assemblies for transporting to the site. From this option, we also calculated the number of units of the panels carried by the vehicle and the panel size for a suitable vehicle.

Challenge

Separate & specific environments were required for drafting, whereas a model view was needed to avoid shifting the model elements with changes in the drawings.

Solution

In Tekla, the model and drawing environments are different & we cannot move ‘drawing’ to the model environment simultaneously. As a result, the final model was not edited/tampered with the shift in the model elements because of drawing change.

Value Addition and Summary..

BIM helped Pinnacle Infotech to plan using intelligent models and allowed Pinnacle team to anticipate, plan and coordinate every aspect of the project design, detailing and construction. It helped to identify constructability issues before construction by detecting the number of clashes, thus avoiding work stoppages, rework and wastage of time, material and manpower.

Mr. Pinaki Karmakar, Deputy Manager & Mr. Tanmoy Paul, Assistant Manager, Pinnacle Infotech said – “BIM software helped us progress through each phase of the project, starting from floor setup to structural and MEP clash detection. We have reviewed critical areas in 3D for any changes made and evaluated space constraint successfully. BIM facilitated various design disciplines to collaborate in a flawless manner as a single information platform, enhancing work efficiency, reducing errors, verifying aesthetic looks and improving building performance.”…

“Using BIM software for model design, we could easily produce drawings with various cutaways, elevations and sections, bringing the project to life. We used Revit models in Navisworks for project coordination and thus could avoid the cost of rework from the existence of clashes.” – added Mr. Biswaroop Todi, Global Vice President, Pinnacle Infotech.

“Our team benefitted in terms of accuracy, data integrity, revision management, quality of detailing and higher productivity. We could successfully generate coordinated models and allowed our consultant to check possible interference building systems, leading to better project planning, reducing and reduced delay in construction. BIM solution played a vital role in design optimization, coordination and construction management. It was a pleasure to see that our BIM engineers worked in a coordinated manner, completing the project on time.” – concluded Mr. Bimal Patwari, CEO, Pinnacle Infotech.

Pence Kelly Concrete, LLC

Pinnacle has been great to work with! I've worked with them for over 2.5 years now. The quality of work has tremendously improved since when we initially started working with them. Most of that was establishing a SOP for how we wanted to see the drawings.

We'd love to hear about your next project.
