Structural Engineering Services Project Overview

Cargill, Inc. Boiler Access Stair and Platform project involved the development of a structural steel platform spanning 1,500 sq. ft. in Eddyville, Iowa. The client provided steel fabrication specifications required for the platform erection. The project aimed to create an elevated access platform for the factory’s boiler equipment.

Scope of the Structural Engineering Services Project

  • • Created 3D BIM models and extracted quantities of structural elements.
  • • Prepared fabrication deliverables and identified potential construction issues.
  • • Provided IFC files for client review and approval.
  • • Delivered KSS and DXF files to support part drawings.
  • • Generated NC files for all structural plates, including connection, gusset, and base plates.

Challenges & Solutions of the Industrial Plant Project

Challenge: The structural documents provided only a generic gusset plate connection detail, which did not match the project-specific conditions. Multiple HSS braces connected to a single column required a customized gusset plate connection.

Solution: Pinnacle utilized the Tube Gusset component from Tekla Warehouse and configured the end offset values for the bolted connections to create the required gusset plate assemblies accurately.

Challenge: The stair modeling required accurate placement of treads, risers, and stringers. While following the provided stair details, it was identified that the horizontal length needed revision for proper placement.

Solution: Calculated the required stair extension length to position the stringer correctly. The proposed changes were accepted, and the structural engineering design was updated accordingly.

Pinnacle's Value Addition

  • Prepared structural shop drawings to support accurate assembly of steel elements on site.
  • Generated NC files compatible with CNC machines for direct fabrication of steel components for the structural engineering services project.
  • Provided a BOQ with accurate material quantities required for project execution.
